Newswise — Overweight American children and adolescents have become fatter over the last decade, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and National Institute on Aging (NIA). They examined adiposity shifts across socio-demographic groups over time and found U.S. children and adolescents had significantly increased adiposity measures such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and triceps skinfold thickness (TST). The increases in adiposity were more pronounced in some sex-ethnic groups such as black girls. In addition, these groups gained more abdominal fat over time, which was indicated by waist size and posed greater health risks than elevated BMI. Their results are featured in the August 2010 issue of the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity.

“Our analysis shows that the increase in adiposity among U.S. children and adolescents was unequally distributed across socio-demographic groups and across the spectrum of BMI, waist circumference and triceps skinfold thickness measures,” said Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, senior author of the study and an associate professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of International Health. “Heavier children and adolescents gained more adiposity, especially waist size, and these findings were most significant among children ages 6 to 11. Ethnic disparities in mean BMI have also increased substantially when comparing black girls with their white counterparts for all ages combined. Solely examining the changes in the prevalence of overweight and obesity based on fixed BMI cut points could not gain such important insights regarding shifts in the obesity epidemic.”

To examine these changes over time, researchers conducted a comprehensive analysis of nationally representative survey data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) since the late 1980s. They examined the changes in American boys and girls ages 2 to 19, as well as by ethnic groups at the population level.

“Our research suggests that U.S. young people may be at greater obesity-related risks than what was revealed by increases in BMI, as waist circumference is a better predictor of future health risks, such as for type 2 diabetes and heart disease in adults,” said May A. Beydoun, PhD, staff scientist, National Institute on Aging, NIH/IRP, and a former postdoctoral fellow in the Bloomberg School’s Department of International Health. “More vigorous efforts should be made to understand the underlying causes. Moving forward, this could help guide future population-based interventions including those focusing on the total population and those targeting vulnerable or genetically susceptible groups.”

During menopause, many women report that the challenge of weight loss becomes even more difficult. The need to lose weight haunts women most of the time, and now more men are reporting the same struggle. When women hit menopause, weight gathers around the waist and hips; despite our best efforts to diet and exercise.

What we know is that this additional body fat is linked to your hormones. Most women follow a conventional low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet with lots of processed foods. Eventually this diet creates a condition known as insulin resistance; see Dr. Schwarzbein’s book on the book list. When you are insulin resistant, your body converts calories into fat even when you are dieting. Menopause feels like a losing battle, but it doesn’t have to be.

When you are stressed, as the body typically is during menopause, stress hormones block weight loss. Despite adequate food, the body acts as if it’s in a famine and stores all spare calories as fat.
This leads to a metabolic disorder called adrenal fatigue.

Many women combine a high-stress life with a low-fat, high-carb diet which creates a powerful hormonal imbalance which causes us to gain weight. Yo-yo dieting exacerbates the problem.
Also, when a woman is on a high-carb diet she is often barraged with a craving for sweets. A lot of people believe in diets because when they get rapid results the initial excitement leads them to belive the diet had been affective.. They are often fuelled by claims on the internet that you can lose a vast or substantial amount of weight in just a few days. The problem with this type of diet is the results are alway temporary.

Often these diets will be fashionable for a while, at best they will present you with a sensible nutrition plan or at worst make a huge amount of money for the inventor, while leaving you with a plan that is impossible to maintain, could leave you ill and you end up giving up after a week or so.

If the diet offers quick weight loss by concentrating your efforts on eating more of one type of food and restricting another it is a fad diet. You will not benefit from a balanced diet and they regime will often suggest taking supplements.

Many supplements and vitamins are not absorbed into the body unless they are taken with certain foods that could be banned from the diet. A diet of this nature can leave you lacking in nutrients and minerals.

This can leave you feeling weak and lacking in energy. 

Fad Diets can be boring and overly restrictive. Once the novelty has worn off you will not enjoy your meals. You will naturally start to crave the foods missing in the regime and you will break the diet.

Quick weight loss diets are just a tempory way to lose weight. I wouldn’t even call it a solution since the chances of you gaining the weight you lose plus some is more than above average.

In order to lose weight and reduce belly fat you need to follow a balanced diet. It is the only gauranted way to permanently reduce your belly fat and lose weight.

When you go on these diets you are encouraging your body to go into a cycle of fast weight loss and fast weight gain.

This is the worst thing you can do for your health and your self esteem, you probably would have been better of staying the same weight you were before you started dieting.

So be aware when you are doing your research these diets will not help you in the long term.

The best way to maintian your weight loss is to eat a varied diet, do not over eat, exercise regularly and keep away from fad diets.
